All clients are ideal...they come with their own individual nutrition issues. As a Registered Dietitian it is my hope that we can come up with a plan of action to meet their needs. By giving the client time to communicate what they have been dealing with and coming up with goals together....the support can come in a gentle and nurturing environment. Many clients come in not knowing what to expect or are scared of making changes. That is not unusual. Helping them see what they can accomplish and breaking it down into manageable pieces can decrease the anxiety of coming in.
When clients come in for example with an eating disorder diagnosis...the dietitian may be the last person they want to talk to. Inviting clients into their own care and treatment plan is key to progress in this area. Giving clients choice and empowerment helps them see that they are succeeding.
Whatever the nutrition issue that someone is coming in for it is important to listen well to their story...we all have one, empathize, and come up with a plan that will work for them. Providing support and encouragement and not dictating what should be done is so important. Goals that are reachable will give empowerment to a client. Lift up.
