Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine make up a full medical system that treats just about anything. Acute ailments can be cleared up with just a few treatments. While chronic conditions take regular and longer term treatment, it is a worthwhile commitment for those in search of deep level healing that also includes a broadening and deepening spiritual awareness. This is what I am committed to in my practice. It is my life's work. While the subtlety of this medicine allows for the detection of subtle patterns before they become disease, this medicine is also effective for prevention.

Acupuncture is a safe, effective, and natural form of healthcare that will get you feeling your best. Treating a patient is not just a matter of giving someone acupuncture. All aspects of your wellness are addressed, from stress management, and exercise, to diet and simple lifestyle changes. Watching patients reclaim their health, and seeing the immense changes that transpire over weeks or months, is truly phenomenal. Many patients come to me after "trying everything else," and it's great to be able to give them the relief they've been searching for.

My interest in acupuncture began in 1986 after I first received treatment. My positive experience led me to want to study the tradition and to offer it to others. The foundation of my practice is in Five-Element Acupuncture. Continuing education has led me to other treatment forms that work well with the Five-Element tradition. Since 2004 I have been certified as an Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist working with addictions. Since 2006 I have been certified as a Zero Balancer. I use Dr. Tan's Balance method for pain relief. I enjoy working with both children and adults, and employ acupressure and non-insertive needle techniques for those who would prefer an option to working with the needles. My approach to treatment is to hold each patient in their wholeness, working from a place that sees human beings as an integral part of nature made up of complex relationships between their anatomy and physiology and their emotional and spiritual bodies. I listen and respond to the body's systems as uniquely expressed by each person to address imbalances and restore health and well-being. With improved balance in the body's systems, the quality of your life will be enhanced.

Rooted in the principle of holism, acupuncture places great emphasis on treating the whole person and views the body, mind, spirit and context as an integrated unit. Context includes environmental factors such as culture, community, family, social networks and history. The goal of treatment is to establish “balance” within the individual and in relationship to their environment. My practice treats a variety of conditions including acute and chronic pain, metabolic dysfunction, gastrointestinal distress, fertility support, respiratory disease, fatigue, mental clarity as well as anxiety and depression.

Acupuncture in Maine - is it right for me?
Acupuncture is based on the concepts of oriental medicine or traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and is one of the oldest healing practices in the world. Maine acupuncturists are health care professionals who evaluate and treat the many conditions, aches and pains that respond to acupuncture.

Acupuncturists insert very fine acupuncture needles into the body. The purpose of the needles is to stimulate acupuncture points or meridians. The needles do not inject any substance into your body and are so fine as to be virtually impossible to feel. In some cases, acupuncture may be accompanied by electrical stimulation or the burning of moxa, a form of heat therapy. Or use acupressure, where physical pressure is applied by hand or elbow to trigger points with the aim of clearing blockages in these meridians.

'Accupuncture' and 'Accupuncturist' are common mis-spellings.

Credentials for Maine licensed acupuncturists?
A licensed acupuncturist in Maine needs a minimum of two years college education and must complete three years of professional training and pass the State's approved licensing examination. The three year program includes both theory and hands-on clinical practice. Most States' professional training programs are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM) and by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).
