How Should I Choose A Naturopath?

There are two types of naturopaths. Licensed Naturopathic Physician (ND), also known as Doctors of Naturopathic Medicine (NMD), are primary care physicians educated at a four-year graduate-level naturopathic medical school, studying in the same sciences as medical doctors, but with an emphasis on holistic and nontoxic approaches. In addition to standard medical training at anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and organic chemistry, the ND is required to complete training in clinical nutrition, acupuncture, homeopathic medicine, botanical medicine, psychology and counseling.

They have training of at least five years—including attendance at a four-year graduate-level ND medical school. A strong emphasis is placed on disease prevention, wellness, diet and nutrition, as well as on the correct use of herbal agents. Naturopathic physicians can perform minor surgeries and prescribe natural remedies. They avoid antibiotics and other conventional medicines in favor of noninvasive, organic and natural treatments, such as therapeutic nutrition and physical medicine. An ND must complete exams to become licensed by the state in which he or she will practice.

Traditional naturopaths study at vocational schools, distance learning programs, self-study, or apprenticeships with other practitioners. While they do not have degrees from medical school, they hold certificates from professional naturopathic organizations and learn physiology, anatomy and specialized treatments. Like naturopathic doctors, traditional naturopaths treat the person as a whole, encouraging holistic healing physically, mentally, and emotionally.

As with any therapy, a personal connection with the practitioner can be as important as the technique itself, so choose a naturopath who makes you feel comfortable. If she seems reluctant or unable to address your questions or concerns, keep looking until you find someone who instills confidence in you.
